The director, and some of the children, at the Zamglai
orphanage which is home to around 120 girls between the ages
of 4 and 24, many of whom have special needs.

One of our volunteers
meets one of the kids at Zamglai.

As you can see in this childrens' dormitory, conditions are
as clean and cheerful as the dedicated staff can make them,
but resources are stretched to the limit - every bedroom in
this orphanage is just as crowded.

As well as delivering aid and investing in redevelopment projects,
we spend our time away working directly with our friends at
target institutions. In this photo one of our volunteers is
running a party and teaching children to make hobby-horses.

Sometimes there is nothing the staff alone can do to improve
things; this picture shows the toilet facility
at the Berezna orphange, as we found them in 2002.
There was no budget to make improvements or even to empty the
waste
pit.
|
 |
We showed the Berezna school to Bob Chase from Bear
Essential Aid, who was so moved he secured support to
replace these with modern plumbed toilets; we were thrilled
to help with this project. The picture shows Bob at the first
stage of the project.

A traditional
greeting
from the members of the "Sunflower Club" at the Kolichivka
school - the club aims to help the children to improve their
community and learn more about the
rest of the world.

Painting a mural at
the "Aratta centre for children & youth" in Chernihiv.
The centre runs a huge variety of services to help children,
families, and the local community, including English lessons
and "bring-and-buy" sales.

The completed mural,
depicting a carousel from the beach at Brighton. The Ukrainian
volunteers have since continued the theme beautifully around
the walls of the entire room!

Young people of the "Anomaly"
theatre group, rehearsing for a visual performance they tour
around schools and universities which explores the dangers
of alcohol, drug use, and HIV.

The Land Rover we bought in 2003, seen with some of the children
at the
Perlina kindergarten in Chernihiv.
The purchase was possible thanks to the first "Canvas" art
raffle. You can find out more about this new art fundraising
concept on our "partners"
page.

On a convoy, the journey is an adventure in itself, before
we even arrive. Here is a typically loaded
lorry on the Kiev
ring road.

 |
A convoyer tries
out for a position as a local officer!
Being part of a convoy
can
be
an immensely rewarding experience
and we do encourage you to get involved. Our "wish
list" explains
some of the ways in which you can do this.
